Ft. Myers, Florida
May 20, 2003
The 2003 Florida Firefighter State Games were hosted this year by Ft. Myers Fire Rescue and neighboring Cape Coral Fire Rescue. With events ranging from off shore fishing to chess, Cape Coral was a perfect venue for all events.
For the fourth consecutive year, East Lake Fire Rescue's Chuck Coit accepted the challenge of the Triathlon. This race consisted of a 1/4 mile swim, 13 mile bike, and a 3.1 mile run. The race was held at the Florida Gulf Coast University campus and proved to be a terrific course. "The swim was held in a lake and the temperature was ideal" said Coit. Coit also had this to say, "The bike leg was flat and fast, unfortunately I made a rookie mistake in forgetting to do something as simple as fill my water bottle. In a race like a triathlon there are a thousand little details to remember so you really have to pay attention to detail. The run was brutally hot, but at least on the bike leg there was a 23 to 24 mile an hour wind in your face. The run course was 1 1/2 mile out and back which is a bit of a boring run. With temperatures in the 90's and humidity in the 80's with little or no wind, the run was tough."
Nevertheless, Coit managed to win the Bronze
Medal with a time of 1:09. "It wasn't my best performance ever, but you
can't get a PR (personal record) every time you race" said Coit. When
asked if he will compete in next year's games, Coit replied, "I have two silvers
and one bronze, I can't contemplate retirement until I bring home the gold!"
