EAST LAKE - Fire commissioners didn't have to look far when searching for a new fire chief.  In fact, they didn't look at all.
Jeff Parks, who has been interim chief of East Lake Fire and Rescue since last December, was tapped for the permanent post Wednesday night during the regular monthly meeting of the East Lake Fire Commission.
Pending approval of an employment contract, the appointment will be effective Oct. 1, commissioners said.  Parks who has been with the fire unit 17 years, is replacing Ron Taylor who retired in December.  Parks served at deputy chief under Taylor.
"Because of this training, I believe I am better equipped for the job," he said.

Besides his on-the-job training in fire department procedures, Parks also earned a master's degree in public administration at the Tampa campus of Troy State University.  He has two associate degrees in emergency medical training.
"I think Jeff was our logical choice.  He knows the department well," said Fire Commission Chairman Jim Nobles, who made the motion to offer the job to Parks.
A contract is being prepared and is expected to be finalized soon so commissioners can vote on it during the commission's September meeting.
Parks accepted the position pending approval of the contract which will include a salary range.
